MAJOR DUTIES:
The successful applicant for this position will serve as the
national United States Drought Portal (USDP) Program Manager within
the Climate Monitoring Branch, Scientific Services Division of the
National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The USDP, a cornerstone of
the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), will
provide user communities (the general public, decision-makers and
businesses, and drought experts and scientists) with a critical link
to information, products, and service providers. It also will
support the U.S. Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) concept to
provide seamless, timely access to integrated Earth observations,
data, information and products. In 2004, the Western Governor's
Association developed a set of requirements for a NIDIS through a
broad-based team of Federal, including NOAA, and non-Federal
partners. NIDIS is one of six near-term opportunities identified by
USGEO in the Strategic Plan for the U.S. Integrated Earth Observing
System. Specific duties of the USDP Program Manager will include:
1) Manage the USDP projects in the context of the overall NIDIS
activity in conjunction with the governmental partners, and direct
governance of USDP including oversight and accountability to ensure
adherence to established processes and policies; 2) Provide and
enhance user access to a wide array of climatic data products, and
services through a Web Portal and supervise content development and
operational updates to the scientific resources in the USDP; 3)
Support and promote core USDP monitoring elements, including the
U.S. Drought Monitor and North American Drought Monitor; 4) Engage
on USGEO and international foci relevant to the USDP; 5) Participate
in drought monitoring activities and applied research to enhance
monitoring capabilities with the Climate Monitoring Branch.

We now need someone who can maximise our position in this increasingly fierce marketplace.

The role of the Energy Meteorologist is designed to support the trading desks in Centrica (both as Accord and British Gas Trading) within their daily activities as short to medium range weather forecasts are critical for enabling commercially sound trading and balancing decisions. In addition, the role will assist in the identification, analysis and subsequent reporting of the longer term weather exposure from both a gas and electricity perspective.

Principal Accountabilities:

* Prepare and provide timely and accurate daily weather forecasts to the energy and weather traders
* Evaluate and recommend appropriate models used in producing the forecasts for the Gas and Power forecasting teams
* Manage and maintain the centrally located database for all weather variables
* Provide input on the weather factors enabling well informed decisions on commodity hedging activities via the Gas and Power Hedging Groups
* Identify and assimilate current research into forecasting techniques
* Assist and analyse with other teams, the risk dynamics of weather products so that the optimal weather hedging portfolio is constructed

Person Specification

Qualifications:

* Degree in Meteorology or related subject

Essential Skills:

* Work experience at the Meteorological Office or any other established weather forecasting company
* Ability to work in a pressurised environment
* Analytical and quantitative skills
* Good communicator
* Team player

Desirable Skills:

* Exposure to the UK and continental energy markets

track Assistant Professor in Climatology to begin in August 2008. A
Ph.D. in Geography is preferred; ABD candidates nearing completion
will also be considered. Teaching responsibilities will include
weather, climatology, and other courses in the candidate's
specialty. Teaching load is four courses per academic year.
Additional responsibilities will include serving as New Hampshire
State Climatologist.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the
growth and development of a small undergraduate department that
places a high value on both research and teaching excellence. The
potential exists to develop research relationships with other
university units, such as the Institute for Earth, Oceans, and
Space; University Office of Sustainability; the Department of Earth

Graduate assistantship

The Principal Investigators of a recently awarded National Science
Foundation grant seek a motivated research assistant who is
interested in pursuing research on how the urban heat island augments
convection as part of his/her M.S. Thesis. The study develops
a warm-season climatology of convection for several cities in the
southeastern U.S. The ideal candidate will possess a strong
background in geographic information systems and meteorology and/or
climatology. Experience in using ArcGIS and/or Intergraph
Geomedia, as well as an interest in thunderstorm environments is a
plus. Two academic years plus summer funding under a Research
Assistantship is available to the selected Master’s candidate. The
funding includes a competitive stipend and full-tuition waiver.
