PhD Student position in Germany

The Atmospheric Environmental Research Division (IMK-IFU) of the
Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (Forschungszentrum
Karlsruhe) has a long tradition in atmospheric environmental research,
with its main emphasis on studying the impact of
anthropogenic activities on the interactions between atmosphere and
bio-sphere, air quality, regional climate, and hydrology.
Studies in these research fields are characterised by an
interdisciplinary and integrated approach involving field measurements,
process studies and numerical modelling. Results obtained in these
research fields are used for defining reliable and efficient
mitigation and adaptation strategies.

In the area of air quality, IMK-IFU has established close
collaborations in Latin America, particularly in Mexico City and Santiago
de Chile. The emphasis of these collaborations has been on the
generation of emission inventories, numerical simulations of air
quality and the definition of abatement strategies taking into account
the expected demographic and economic development of the
respective country or city.

Within the recently started HGF-initiative “Risk-Habitat-Megacity”
IMK-IFU is seeking for a

PhD Student
The tasks will be
-    Adaptation of the traffic emission model NEMO to the fleet
composition of Chile
-    Applying NEMO at defined hot spot regions in Santiago de Chile
within the frame of the Risk-Habitat-Megacity Initiative
-    Simulation of the dispersion of traffic emissions in hot spot
regions of Santiago de Chile with the Langrangian model GRAL
-    Scenario calculations and statistical analysis of results

The work will be in close cooperation with the Institute for Internal
Combustion Engines and Thermo-dynamics Department Emissions of
the TU-Graz, with the Institute of Transport Research, Berlin (IVF) of
the DLR and with the Department of Geophysics of the
Universidad de Chile. Due to the interdisciplinary and international
project focus, the willingness for long term visits abroad in
Austria / Graz and in Santiago de Chile is a perquisite for the
position.

The position is limited to three years. The salary level is according
to German public service regulation.

Your profile

You have a master/diploma degree in Environmental Sciences,
Engineering, Physics, Geography or Meteorology. Programming and computer
skills (FORTRAN, C, MATLAB, GIS) are indispensable. Good communication
skills in English are required, Spanish would be beneficial.

*2 PhD students in stable isotope ecology*

Responsibilities:
Study of carbon and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystems using stable
isotopes of carbon and oxygen. Tasks include measurements of
isotopologues of carbon dioxide and water with a laser spectroscopy
system in the lab and in the field. One position focuses on the
development of flux chambers and their application for automated
isotope measurements of soil respiration and leaf photosynthesis.
The other position focuses on manipulative drought experiments under
laboratory and field conditions. Both positions include
experiment design and realization, participation in field campaigns,
presentation of results nationally and internationally as well
as team work.

Requirements:
Dynamic and motivated students with M.Sc./Diplom or equivalent in
ecology, environmental sciences, atmospheric sciences or related
fields. Expertise to speak, read and write in English is required.

The Danish Climate Centre is responsible for the provision of
plausible future climate conditions for Denmark, the Faroe Islands
and Greenland. The Danish Climate Centre (DKC) is involved in many
international collaborative projects, where modelling and analysis of
the results are central elements. Both Global Climate Models (GCMs) and
Regional Climate Models (RCMs) are used. We seek two post-docs to join
our energetic research team. You should have some experience running
a GCM or RCM, be literate in UNIX, and have a working knowledge of C or
FORTRAN. As part of the DKC team you will work on refining climate
models, utilize and improve climate models, implement ensemble
simulations, or undertake research on methods for assessing
probabilistic climate change from multi-model ensembles.

Within the many projects that the group is involved in, you will have
scope to develop your own specific foci while supporting the broader
project objectives. DKC is a leading climate research group in northern
Europe, active in applied modelling activities in climate change,
seasonal forecasting, and climate system processes. The group has

The Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) at the
University of Wisconsin is searching for a postdoctoral
scholar to help us better understand the role of global land use
practices, particularly within modern agricultural systems, on the
planetary cycles of water, energy, carbon and nutrients.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with a new generation of coupled
atmosphere-biosphere models (based on versions of the NCAR CCSM
climate model and the IBIS terrestrial biosphere model) to explore the
importance of land use practices – including irrigation,
fertilizer use, crop selection, fire management – on the whole earth
system.  The work will particularly focus on changes in
climate, hydrology and biogeochemical processes resulting from changes
in global agricultural practices.  The work will be done in
coordination with scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research (NCAR) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Candidates with graduate training in climate and ecosystem modeling
will be strongly considered.  Backgrounds in agricultural
systems, global ecosystem processes, hydrology, and biogeochemistry
would be extremely helpful.  Excellent quantitative and modeling
skills are required; excellent communication and writing skills
desired.  The ability to work within, and contribute to, an
interdisciplinary team is a must.

(NCDC) in Asheville, NC, is recruiting for a Computer
Programmer to provide support to the Upper Air Program in the NCDC Data
Processing Branch.  Qualifying applicants should hold a
Bachelor’s Degree in either Physical Science, Atmospheric Science,
Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or have equivalent
working experience.

Prerequisites for the position are three years of experience working
with a Linux/Unix operating system and Object Oriented
programming languages such as C++ and Java, as well as working
knowledge of other higher order programming languages to include
FORTRAN and C with three years of large-scale database server
experience such as Oracle, MySQL, or PostgresSQL.  Candidates will be
required to write and keep up-to-date user and developer-level

The Center for Ocean–Land–Atmosphere Studies (COLA) is seeking
applicants for a post-doctoral position in regional climate
modeling.
The successful candidate will conduct dynamic downscaling of the
NCEP CFS coupled seasonal forecasts for both the North American
and the South American monsoons. This project will also involve
assessing the potential for dynamic downscaling of seasonal
forecasts for hydrological forecasts for some of the major river
basins in the domain. Expertise in either the North American or the
South American monsoon is preferred. A Ph.D. in atmospheric
sciences, hydrology or a related discipline is required. Familiarity
with coding and running regional atmospheric models,
